Taking out Stitches…

…or ‘frogging’, as it is sometimes called.  If you’re wondering why, as you unpick your precious stitches, you will, ‘Rippit, Rippit’!

Today was the day Henry went to be frogged!  He was not impressed…

I took as a good sign just how MAD he was about the whole thing.  Only 4 stitches but the fury, the spitting and snarling …phew! We’re both glad that’s over…

Higgins checked out the crate…

…and the patient…

…a risky business with that cold nose!

so Henry went to bed, and I had a soothing cuppa, and did some therapeutic baking.

When my children were very young we lived for a few years in Pembrokeshire, in fact my daughter as born there.  We were very rural and I didn’t drive, so  we were very self sufficient, and any treats were homemade or foraged.  Jam was always blackberry, although as the children complained about ‘lumps’ it was bramble jelly, there was a freelance apple tree, and one amazing year  the biggest field mushrooms I’ve ever seen.

I was always baking to feed these hungry mouths and a favourite was Welsh Cakes.  I haven’t made any for years, and was amazed to find I could dredge the recipe up from memory (this is the memory that never knows where the car keys are!)

If you’d like to try them out, I’ve added them to the Recipe page which you’ll find at the top.

I have a knitting project on the go too, some birthday socks for a dear friend.  Hard wearing and colourful was the key, and I must extol the wonders of Twitter again.  I tweeted for recommendations and got an answer back from the lovely Pip of the Sock Yarn Shop. I wizzed over and had a really hard job to choose from all the lovely yarns and colours but finally settled on a  Kaffe Fassett  design for Regia.  I ordered in the afternoon and was unwrapping the parcel at 8 o’clock the following morning!

…and I got a free bag to keep it in!

I think I’ve been creative enough today to join in with Handmade Monday, despite the feline frogging!   Have you heard about it? You’ll find a guest post explaining  it on Craft Blog UK which is well worth a look in itself if you’re a fellow blogger.

So I think it’s time to get back to the knitting needles if I’m to finish the socks by the end of the month, and offer a warm lap to Henry to make up for the indignities of the day.

See you soon…..x

About penny

I live in Norfolk, England in a cottage on the edge of the Norfolk Broads where it can be peaceful and beautiful, or wet and muddy, or occasionally wild and windswept. With me is husband Tim, Henry the elderly and opinionated tabby cat, and Higgins, the miniature dachshund with a massive personality. You’ll find me chattering on about wool and textiles, knitting and crochet, recipes, books and patterns, exhibitions and shopping and of course, the adventures of a small dog! Planet Penny has a Facebook Page, you can find me on UK Handmade and I am featured on Channel4/4Homes Favourite Craft Blog List.

Well I don’t think there’s any doubt you’ve been creative enough to be part of Handmade Monday! Those Welsh cakes look fab! (I can never find the car keys either – I keep adding keyrings in the mistaken belief that a bigger bunch is harder to lose!)
Welcome to Handmade Monday anyway – lovely to have you join in! x

DH is having 4 stitches out tomorrow, hopefully without any spitting and snarling!
    Those Welsh cakes look delicious.

Thanks for the Welsh cake recipe. I need to learn to make those. We usually buy them to eat in the car when we go to Marks & Spencers but as there are 5 of us and 6 Welsh cakes there is usually a mild scrum for the last one! Making enough for everyone is a much better option.

Henry doesn’t look pleased does he? Glad he is ok.

I always seem to read delicious recipe posts when I’m starving. These look yummy can just imagine them smothered with melted butter. Thanks for the tip on the yarn shop too

Your blog had me in stitches! A pun I am sure Henry would not appreciate, but I did love the photo of Higgins (lovely, lovely dog) checking him out!

Hope Henry is recouperating from his frogging. Not that I would wish that on him again, but maybe dissolvable stitches would be an option?
The stripe colours on those socks look right up my street. And the welsh cakes…mmm mmm mmmmmm!

    Hi Penny
I’m being naughty and blogging whilst camping, we made friends with our neighbours who have kindly let me have a peek at my blog … so I had to visit any new posts on my blog list of course.
Good news about Henry, poor kitty, now his fur can grow back! neautiful sock yarn, love the Faffe Fassett design. Did you know he has a weekend bolt hole in Hastings? and currently has an exhibition on at Charleston House which I would love to go and see. You might want to go if you have time when you are this way at the end of the month :0). I didn’t know about him till you told me, so thank you , I have enjoyed researching about him and his designs.
Happy welsh cake munching, and happy knitting days xox P

Hee Hee Henry positively stalked out of that crate! Love all the photos and nosey Higgins. Thank you for posting about the Welsh Cakes. My mum used to make them for us and as soon as I read Welsh Cakes the memories came back and I was thinking how did she make those again…well thankyou for the recipe also I will have to introduce my boys to that goodness 🙂 Nice sock yarn too!

Poor you and poor Henry, I’m glad it’s all over for you now.

The ‘Bakestones’ took me right back to my Welsh childhood. My Mother used to bake them – some with raisins and, for me, some without. I always sliced and buttered them. I might just have to make some soon.
